Reverse Hypoglycemia Naturally: How Andree Stopped Years of Blood Sugar Crashes While Eating Carbs

In this case study, I’'ll share how our client Andree went from years of hypoglycemia symptoms to complete stability in about 3 months.

She did this while bringing back the carbs she had previously cut out and reacted to, which is a huge win in itself.

If you are new here and we have not quite connected yet, my name is Isaac Pohlman. I’m a registered dietitian, a fellow person with type 1 diabetes, and the founder of The Pohlman Institute.

Our team helps clients improve their blood sugar for good using a root cause approach. We do not give one size fits all, cookie cutter advice. We are not telling you to cut out carbs or fast or use band-aid treatments that don’t work long term.

Instead we help you:

  • Find your sweet spots for things like carbs, stress, and routines

  • Revive your metabolism so your body can actually process carbs

  • Address mineral imbalances and other root causes so your blood sugar can stabilize for good

This is exactly what we did for Andree to reverse her hypoglycemia symptoms in a sustainable way.

Andree’s Story: Years of Hypoglycemia Symptoms and Constant Crashes

Before we started working together, Andree had classic hypoglycemia symptoms that had been going on for years. She experienced things like:

  • Feeling anxious and irritable before meals

  • Feeling weak, shaky, and sweaty if she went too long without eating

  • Still feeling hungry after meals and never quite satisfied

  • Needing to eat something every 1-2 hours just to feel okay

  • Waking up in the middle of the night needing to eat

  • Exhaustion, overwhelm, and trouble sleeping

In an effort to stop the crashes, she kept cutting out more and more carbs, especially starches like oatmeal and rice and tried:

  • B vitamin and energy focused supplements

  • Exercise

  • Working with different functional practitioners and naturopathic doctors

But none of it really moved the needle on her hypoglycemia symptoms or her constant blood sugar crashes. She still felt like her body was running her day instead of the other way around.

That is when she reached out to us and we started using The Pohlman Method.

Step One: Root Cause Testing for Hypoglycemia With The Pohlman Lab Bundle

For Andree, one of the biggest missing pieces was what was going on underneath the surface at the nutrient and mineral level.

To figure that out we used The Pohlman Lab Bundle. This is a set of nutrient based labs that allow us to pinpoint:

  • Mineral deficiencies

  • Mineral imbalances

  • Possible toxicities that drive blood sugar issues

This was especially important for Andree because:

  • She had recently gone through a pregnancy, which uses up a lot of minerals

  • She planned to have more kids in the future

  • Her symptoms had really ramped up after pregnancy

When we looked at her labs, a clear pattern showed up that explained her hypoglycemia and constant crashes.

High Blood Sugar Ratio: Insulin Dominance and Constant Hunger

The first thing we found was a high blood sugar ratio.

This ratio looks at calcium and magnesium. Both are important nutrients (minerals), but when this ratio is high it suggests that your body is insulin dominant.

That means:

  • Your body is missing nutrients crucial to maintaining stable blood sugar and preventing hypoglycemia symptoms

  • Your body relies heavily on insulin to control blood sugar

  • Too much insulin can drive your blood sugar too low and trigger hypoglycemia symptoms

This really explained Andree’s experience of:

  • Feeling weak and shaky if she did not eat every 1-2 hours

  • Feeling anxious and irritable before meals

  • Feeling ravenously hungry even after eating

When insulin is too high for what your body needs, your blood sugar can tank.

I saw a different version of this in my own story. After my type 1 diabetes diagnosis, when I first started using insulin, my hunger went through the roof. I would eat dinner, still be hungry, eat again, still be hungry, and repeat that several times just to feel somewhat satisfied.

It’s not that insulin is “bad”. It’s that your environment and your mineral balance change how your body responds to it.

For Andree, this insulin dominant pattern lined up perfectly with her hypoglycemia symptoms and constant need to eat.

High Thyroid Ratio: Poor Thyroid USe and Low Metabolism

The second thing we found was a very high thyroid ratio.

This ratio reflects how well your body can use thyroid hormone.

When this ratio is high it usually means:

  • Your body is not taking up and using thyroid hormone well

  • It does not matter how much thyroid hormone you make or even how much you take as medication

  • Your metabolism slows down and your cells are not getting the signal they need

Thyroid hormone drives your metabolism and touches every single cell in the body. That affects:

  • Energy

  • Mood

  • Digestion

  • Sleep

  • Carb tolerance

  • Lab work

For Andree this made a lot of sense because she:

  • Was exhausted and overwhelmed

  • Had trouble sleeping

  • Was not hungry at appropriate times

  • Did not tolerate carbs

  • Had ongoing blood sugar instability

When blood sugar is off, thyroid health is usually off. And when thyroid is off, it becomes even harder to stabilize blood sugar.

So improving this thyroid ratio was a huge factor for her hypoglycemia and her ability to feel stable again.

Low Adrenal Ratio: Poor Stress Response and Constant Lows

The third pattern we saw was a low adrenal ratio

This ratio compares sodium and magnesium and reflects the health of your adrenal glands.

Your adrenals help your body respond to stressors, including low blood sugar. They are designed to help prevent blood sugar from dropping too low.

When this ratio is low it usually means:

  • The adrenal glands are tired and not keeping up

  • It’s harder for your body to prevent blood sugar from crashing

  • You are more likely to have frequent lows and need to eat constantly

This explained why Andree:

  • Could not prevent low blood sugars no matter what she tried

  • Kept waking up in the night needing to eat

  • Felt like she got stuck in the same hypoglycemia cycle over and over

You can eat all the right foods, take all the supplements, and still crash if your adrenal system is not able to respond and keep blood sugar from dropping.

So for Andree, this low adrenal ratio was a big piece of her root cause picture.

Balancing Minerals To Reverse Hypoglycemia and Stabilize Blood Sugar

Once we had this nutrient and mineral map, we used it to guide very specific nutrition and lifestyle changes.

For Andree that included:

  • Food choices that helped balance her calcium and magnesium so she was not so insulin dominant

  • Nutrition and lifestyle shifts that helped her body use thyroid hormone better

  • Simple day to day changes that supported her adrenal function so her body could protect her from constant lows

And this matters for more than just food. It’s not only about eating the right minerals or taking the right supplements.

For minerals to stay in balance you also need:

  • A routine that does not burn through them with constant internal stress

  • Sleep and rest that actually allow your body to recover

  • A way of living that lets your body hold on to what it is given instead of wasting it

That is a big part of what we focused on with Andree inside The Pohlman Method.

Andree’s Results: No More Hypoglycemia Symptoms and Eating Carbs Again

By addressing her mineral imbalances and supporting her thyroid and adrenal function, Andree’s results were huge.

Over about 3 months she:

  • Stopped having hypoglycemia symptoms

  • Felt emotionally and physically stable instead of anxious and shaky

  • Felt more energized and less overwhelmed

  • Felt satisfied after meals instead of constantly hungry

  • Brought back carbs without low blood sugars, including foods like oatmeal and rice

  • No longer had tingling fingers

  • Learned how to support her whole body, not just her blood sugar readings

Most importantly, she now has tools and habits she can carry into her next pregnancy and beyond, instead of living in fear of the next crash.

If You Want To Stop Hypoglycemia Crashes and Eat Carbs Again

If you are living in that same place where:

  • You feel weak, shaky, and anxious if you go too long without eating

  • You have cut more and more carbs but still have low blood sugar symptoms

  • You feel like you have tried everything and nothing sticks

You are not alone, and it does not mean your body is broken.

Many times it simply means no one has helped you look at the root causes that sit underneath your hypoglycemia and blood sugar instability yet.

If you are ready to balance your blood sugar and really restore your health for good like Andree did, message me the word INTEREST.
