One of the best things that you can do to improve your blood sugar and mental and physical health QUICKLY is light exercise, like walking, swimming, or biking.
Here are a few reasons this helps my clients and I:
1. Boosts my mood and provides a nice break between clients
I always look forward to my walks because it allows me to get outside of my home and work environment. These breaks provide a nice mental and energy boost between client prep and calls.
2. Light exercise makes my blood sugar easier to manage
Light exercise, like walking, improves my insulin sensitivity and my ability to tolerate carbs, making it a lot easier to control my blood sugars as someone with type one diabetes.
3. Lowers stress of the day
Any time I can pause, slow down, and step away from my work routine, it helps me become more resilient to stress. When I manage stress better, it inevitably helps to improve my blood sugar and avoid stubborn high blood sugar readings.
4. Helps me think clearly and come up with my best ideas
Sometimes I’ll use walking to spend some time, “writing” my next book (really dictating it) as I walk. In fact, I’ve written my last two books through dictation. Walking is many times where I get my best ideas and have such a clear head that makes writing so much easier and enjoyable.
Bonus: Light
Going outside also helps me get access to light. While more difficult to come by in the Midwest, light during these dark fall and winter months is important because it regulates my circadian rhythm, which improves my insulin sensitivity and sleep quality.
While intense exercise, like strength training and sports can also have so many benefits, when it comes to blood sugar, light, frequent exercise is king!
I go on at least 2-3 short walks a day for that very reason!
